Nerezová a žáruvzdorné oceli charakterizuje dobrá korozní odolnost při normální i vyšší teplotě. Vyznačuje se typickým chemickým složením, jehož základem je nejméně  12% chromu vedle chromu mohou obsahovat také přes 30% niklu nebo až 20% manganu. tyto hlavní slitinové prvky jsou doplněny ještě dalšími jako molybden. v menším měřítku, mědí, titanem, niobem, dusíkem
